Book Review: ‘The Birthday Thief’ by Wonderbly

Book Review: ‘The Birthday Thief’ by Wonderbly

You’ve surely heard of the ever popular ‘Lost my name’ series of books, where your child can star in their very own story, in search of their long lost name. In recent times, this clever company have also released ‘The Kindgom of You’ and most recently, have rebranded to become ‘Wonderbly’. Their latest offering is ‘The Birthday Thief’, a personalised story that changes based on the birth date of the child it belongs to. When their birthday is stolen, our protagonist follows a mysterious trail to find it. This is a book designed for a child’s birthday that will show them how special they really are, on this day and beyond.

By far the best thing about these stories are the chance to completely personalise the story using not only your child’s name, but their favourite things, their likes, their dislikes. You also include your child’s birthday, as it tells the tail of searching through lost lands to find their true age. Every story is unique, with a curious cast of characters personalized to your child’s birthday. So little ones born in June will encounter his royal highness, Lord June. While September children will meet Sir September. And that’s just the beginning… Put them at the centre of their birthday quest by choosing the beautifully-illustrated character that most looks like them!

Ella was able to include her favourites including dolls, pizza and cupcakes! Each and every night, she not only reads the beautiful tale, but also the inscription on the front page. Written by us, especially for her.

It’s unique gifts like these that bring utter joy and happiness to families, over and over. Books that you will treasure forever, that you will read together and look back on in years to come, wondering where that time has gone!

To order your own book, head to WONDERBLY here! You can currently get 15% to celebrate their birthday! The Birthday Thief is $34.95 (before discount)

Skate like Wonder Woman: DC Super Hero Girls Skateboard

Skate like Wonder Woman: DC Super Hero Girls Skateboard

As a child, I loved riding skateboards. It’s one of those things that knows no boundaries. Whether you are a girl or a boy, old or young, tall or short. Everyone can (eventually) learn to ride a skateboard and have fun. Overcoming your fears, persisting at a challenge, loving the reward of learning a new skill. We especially love seeing our children’s eyes light up when they work things out for themselves. In the 80s, skateboards were everywhere. Everyone who was anyone had one! Over the years, some things come and go, but skateboards have always remained a staple of growing up.

DC Superhero Girls Warner BrosIn my house we have also always loved Super Heroes. In recent years, I have loved the fact that Warner Bros. have also focussed on helping girls love and aspire to be Super Heroes themselves. The DC Super Hero Girls universe celebrates friendship, strength, teamwork and unlocking your full potential.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products in collaboration with Big W has released an awesome DC Super Hero Girls skateboard for every thrill-seeking kid in town. The DC Super Hero Girls skateboard features Wonder Woman (or “Wondy” as her friends call her) looking strong, vibrant and colourful; making every flip-trick look extra cool!

This week, Ella has been lucky enough to receive her very own Wonder Woman skateboard. Immediately, her eyes lit up and seeing her learn and conquer the skill was fantastic to watch. Just like Wonder Woman herself, she wanted to harness the strength and inner power that the DC Super Hero Girls encourage, to unlock her full potential! There is nothing better to get the kids off the iPad and active than riding their skateboard, either on the footpath (with parental help of course), in a skate park, or even inside down the corridor. Here are my own children carving it up inside the house!

The DC Super Hero Girls at Super Hero High include Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Bumblebee, Poison Ivy, Katana, Starfire and Frost.

The DC Super Hero Girls skateboard is available in-store for a RRP of $30. Look out for it in Big W’s June/July Toy Catalogue.

Product Review: Kingdom of You from

Product Review: Kingdom of You from

Chances are, that if you are a parent of small children then you read a lot of books. There IS nothing better than spending time with your children, and reading magical books.  In fact, it is recommended that all children read 1000 books before they start school. If you are like me, then you are always on the look out for beautiful, vibrant and engaging picture books that you know your children will adore. There are so many classics that we all love and cherish, and then, every now and then, a new one comes along that just captures your imagination.

You may have come across my previous reviews of the LostMy.Name series of personalised books. Ella and Hudson have both adored seeing themselves immersed in stories of wonder and awe. Previously, Ella was lucky enough to have her own story of adventure, finding the letters to her name as she met some curious and creative creatures along the way. Hudson has found himself lost in space, trying to find his way back home to Melbourne. Both stories are personalised with not only their name, but loved facets of their life.

Their new offering is Kingdom of You.  Literally creating a kingdom that reveals their most loved possessions and treats.. This story is more than simply personalising it with their name. The Kingdom of You is a unique story built around a child’s favourite things. Whether they love dinosaurs and pizza, or princesses and pasta, each young reader is thrown into their own fantasy kingdom packed with whatever they love the most.  Everything in their dream-kingdom is named after them and it becomes their personal quest to clean it up after an unforgettable adventure. The story begins with a frustrated little girl (or boy if you choose) who is ‘fed up’ with grown ups telling her what to do. Escaping to a world of her own, she quickly finds herself in a world of decadence and wonder, until that it is, it all goes slightly wrong. Trying to get back home to her real world, and realising that sometimes it is better to just be happy with what you have. My Ella found herself the Queen of her kingdom, where Princesses helped her solve the problems of the day.  An ice cream monster becomes her arch nemeses as she tries to use wishes granted to her by a ‘laundry genie’ to help her get back home.

A beautiful story brought to life with amazing illustrations make this book a nightly favourite in our household…

Kingdom of You Lost my Name

This book is one of those gifts that will last a life time. Whether they are 5 or 10, they will cherish this story over and over. I simply love the entire range of LostMy.Name books, and have personally given so many as gifts, I’ve lost count! Priced at $39.95 with FREE SHIPPING, their turn around is super fast. Perfect if you’ve left it late! This is one of those reviews that I’m truly thrilled to share as it really is a quality product that families will adore.

Local Legend: Tamara from Nit Clips

Local Legend: Tamara from Nit Clips

Nits. Nothing worse. As a child, I had them. Several times. Living in a household of four kids under six years old meant that if one got it, we all got it. So much so that my Mum actually became a ‘nit nurse’ for a period of time, travelling to schools, checking hair and letting parents know if the dreaded lice or nits had called their child’s head home. I vividly remember having my hair doused in KP24 (think strong chemical shampoo) and lay on Mums bed, face down on a towel as Mum combed my hair and picked each one out. As a child it drove me nuts. I cannot even imagine how my Mum stayed sane!

Lucky enough, we’ve been able to elude the dreaded nit in the Korber household so far. I regularly check around Ella’s hair line (Mum taught me that this is the first place the lice lay their eggs), but to my delight, so far we’ve remained a nit free household. In part, it’s been due to an amazing product that I came across earlier this year – Nit Clips. A simple idea where you apply a couple of drops of tea tree oil (included in the kit)  to a specially crafted hair clip that Ella wears in her hair each day. What makes them even better is the clips come in bright and funky colours, and are able to be used time and time again.

I approached Tamara, Nit Clips owner to ask her about how her business came to be. A local Mum, Tamara saw the need to create a product that could not only serve the purpose of a regular clip, but also keep homes free from dreaded nits and lice. So let’s meet Tamara and learn a little more about this super cool product.

Nit Clips Nit Clips

1. Tell us a bit about your business, your dream, your story

Life is crazy busy, I am a marketing consultant, wife and mum to two girls in daylight hours who crazily decided to start a new business adventure in the few hours a day that remain. NitClips are a fantastic product I discovered and I just knew they were every mums’ dream come true. A simple, natural solution to keep the lice away that was too good to keep to myself, so I went for it. And the rest (like sleep) is history.

2. Magic: What is the most magical thing that has happened to you as a small business owner?
As a small business owner, each mini milestone has been magical – developing the logo, packaging, website, first sale but the most magical thing has been discovering networks of other working mums, who are all so supportive of each other and generous with their advice.

3. Mayhem: What has been your greatest challenge, moment of mayhem?
Lol, school holidays are always mayhem! The ongoing battle between work and family life, accepting calls from unidentified numbers and risking the shriek of children on the background, trying not to be on the phone and focusing on the kids, using your ½ hour of ‘me’ time to answer emails instead of cooking dinner. Everyday is mayhem when there are so many balls in the air.

4. Milestone: What has been your greatest achievement, milestone?
First online sale from someone who wasn’t family or friends.

5. it Forward: Who do you love? What small business are you lusting over right now?
There are 2 ladies in Sydney who have launched funnily enough a hairclip business. I don’t know them, they just popped into my Instagram feed and I love what they are doing online, offline and the brand they are building @omgitsmisscat check it out. Locally I am loving the @motherhoodmelbourne feed, watching the launch and growth of an amazingly supportive bunch of people. Lusting over artwork at the moment. Watercolours by @stefangevers are at the top of my list.

So head on over to Nit Clips if you’d like more information. Everyone will love them, except the lice!

Sydney celebrations with Netflix

Sydney celebrations with Netflix

This past long weekend, we escaped the chaos that is the Melbourne Cup Carnival and headed north to Sydney. We were lucky enough to be guests of Netflix, who held a Christmas celebration for their blogging Stream Team. I’ve felt very privileged to have been a member of this team for almost two years, as we test out and share the fantastic variety of films and television shows that Netflix provide. If you’ve been a follower of Happy Ella After, you will know that I’m a big fan. Some of the best features for families include:

  1. On demand : No waiting around for your (or your child’s) favourite show to be on. Watch it when you like!
  2. Profiles: You can create personalised profiles for each member of your family. Netflix will remember what you’ve watched, and you can even stop and pause your shows and go back to the point you’ve finished once the kids are in bed! They even suggest shows for you, based on your interests and things you’ve watched.
  3. Search function: the search function for kids is fantastic. You can find what your kids want based on the characters that appear. Easy peasy.
  4. Updates: they are forever adding new titles and series. Many of them are exclusive to netflix!
  5. Anywhere, anytime: You can watch Netflix on your TV, your iPad, your phone, your laptop!

So last weekend we headed to Sy-da-ney to catch up with some fellow bloggers and their families to have some fun… here are some shots…

It was so much for to head north for the weekend and just enjoy being with my little family. We actually extended the day and headed to Bondi afterwards to make it a real mini break. I’ve never been to Bondi (no really, I haven’t) and I have to say that it was fantastic. Stay tuned next week for a family friendly review of this iconic city!

Thanks to the entire team for having us!
